Pet Grooming on a Budget
June 2nd, 2008 by Dr. Donna SpectorWith constantly rising gas prices and increasing electric bills, everyone is looking for ways to cut costs. While you certainly don’t want to skimp when it comes to caring for your pets, there are ways to save your pennies without sacrificing Fido’s well-being. One such method is to take care of basic dog grooming at home; professional pet groomers can charge upwards of $30 for just a basic brushing and bath! With the proper steps, bath time does not have to be a huge hassle – for you or your wallet. Some tips to follow for grooming your dogs at home:
- Make sure you have the necessary dog grooming supplies at hand when you start. You’ll want to have a brush or comb that is appropriate for your dog’s coat, as well as a natural dog shampoo.
- Before you begin bath time, remove any mats or tangles from the dog’s fur. Be gentle when you brush or comb; you don’t want to irritate the pup’s skin.
- If you are bathing the dog in a bathtub, place a rubber mat on the floor, so that he will not slip.
- Rinse with warm water (Make sure it is not too hot or ice cold!) and apply shampoo in small amounts. Be careful not to get any soap in your dog’s eyes or ears.
- After lathering, make sure to rinse your dog thoroughly. Failing to remove all the soap can cause dry skin.
- After bath time, reward your faithful friend with some homemade dog treats – he deserves it!

I find it very much entertaining to take care of pets myself instead of hiring people. Above all it helps building a better mutual understanding. I can recollect during her illness, my pet rabbit would wait calmly when I would administer ointments.
