Chefs Name Liv-a-Littles Best Treat

December 21st, 2008 by David Yaskulka

Now it’s not just the dogs and cats who say that Liv-a-Littlesare the best tasting treats. A presitgious panel of chefs from American Masters of Taste named Liv-a-Littles chicken protein treats the best tasting in the world!

Of course, those of us who have treated our pets to Liv-a-Littles already know this. In fact, I just visited Buzzillions to check out the most recent reviews, and it was also #1 ranked for long-time pet owners.

Our boxer boy Bert gets two injections a day, during which he drools waiting for his Liv-a-Littles reward. But the amazing thing is our cat Sterling now joins Bert in the kitchen at medicine time, and he’ll literally stand on two legs to get one! We’ve never had a cat enjoy treats before.

We’re honored to be recognized with this award from renowned chefs!

Congratulations to Baby Girl, December’s Pet of the Month!

December 19th, 2008 by Mira

Wonder what Baby Girl is asking Santa for this year? It’s probably something yummy, and we don’t want to spoil the surprise, but we’re pretty sure she’s going to get her wish.

Our winner for December’s Pet of the Month contest will have lots of goodies for her stocking when she receives her Halo goody bag, filled with Holistic pet care favorites Spot’s Stew, Liv-a-Littles protein treats, and Dream Coat essential fatty acids supplement!

Baby Girl is an adorable five-year-old pit bull, who is very energetic and loves to play. In fact, she’s such a lively pooch, people usually think she’s still a puppy. Though sometimes Baby Girl’s excitement gets the best of her — like last Christmas when she just couldn’t wait to play with her new tennis balls and showed everyone her appreciation by jumping up on the kitchen table where they were sitting!

Though Baby Girl is known to be very active, she also enjoys her quiet time. Her mom says she likes car rides and lazy days in bed – under the covers of course!

She certainly shatters the negative stereotype of the mean pit bull — it’s hard to imagine how anyone could be scared of the sweet-natured Baby Girl. This pittie loves to give kisses and shares a deep bond with her human mommy, who raised her from a puppy and treasures every moment they have together.

Humane Society Gets Its Cabinet Choice

December 18th, 2008 by David Yaskulka

We generally stay clear of politics here, but I thought you’d be interested in this Tails Magazine story on President-elect Obama’s Secretary of Agriculture appointment — the post responsible for laws pertaining to puppy mills and dog fighting, as well as the Animal Welfare Act.

The Humane Society of the United States ran a campaign petitioning the president-elect regarding this post, and in the end got their man (though were less happy about the Secretary of Interior choice).

You’ll recall that Halo’s own Ellen DeGeneres was featured on last month’s cover of the magazine.

Give Thanks to Your Pet

December 17th, 2008 by David Yaskulka

The following post comes to us from Emily Steers. Emily is part of Halo’s public relations team, and is thankful that her puppy, Margo, is such a cool, compassionate friend.

This holiday season, presents are coming in all different shapes and sizes. “Happy Holidays” has taken on a different meaning, and we have all learned to appreciate those things in our lives that come absolutely free-of-charge: relationships with those who respect and care for us.

It is also the time of year to give thanks and appreciation to our non-human friends—our four-legged family of pets that shower us with unconditional love every day. Never ones to ask for a present or a favor (beyond, perhaps, a scratch behind the ears), our cats and dogs certainly should not go unacknowledged during this time of giving.

On November 22, 2008, Halo, Purely for Pets presented “Give Thanks To Your Pet Day” at a Los Angeles-based dog park. Our event was a true hit with all of the dog owners who brought their dogs to the park for exercise and fresh air. Armed with Liv-A-Little treats and a patient camera crew, we on the Halo team had no problem getting dozens of pet owners to take the time to explain why they were most thankful for their pets.

Pharoah, Bean, Ozzie, Bob, Reese, LuLu, Fannie and all of our furry friends had some remarkably caring, conscientious and eloquent owners. The dogs are a source of energy, of companionship, of warmth, and of love, and families and friends came together over stories and their adoration of their pets.

Watch the video below:

Our pets enrich our lives in so many ways—from their lit-up faces that greet us at the door every day, to the fact that owning a pet is proven to lower blood pressure in adults. Halo hopes that every day is Give Thanks To Your Pet Day in your home!

Do You Believe in Animal Magic?

December 16th, 2008 by Guest Blogger

The following post comes to us from guest blogger Dr. Samuel Ross. Dr. Ross is the founder of Green Chimneys, a non-profit organization serving special needs children and injured or abandoned animals.

If you don’t believe in animal magic, you haven’t looked closely enough.

I’ve been fortunate to see that magic work for hundreds of special needs children in thousands of ways for over 60 years. Andrei, an eight-year-old Russian orphan adopted by American parents, suffered from “reactive attachment disorder” and expressed it with frequent and violent outbursts. However, after two years of nurturing a host of animals – cows, sheep, horses, dogs, hawks and emus – Andrei found peace.

Seven-year-old Ashley, suffering profound separation anxiety and selectively mute, found her voice through the care, love and nurturing of Romeo, a horse that had been painfully neglected. Entire groups of children in our care exude confidence discovered through their successful training of Labrador puppies, preparing them to work with the physically disabled.

The magical and therapeutic healing power of animals – for all of us – is unquestionable. There are endless studies and even more first-hand examples. What is behind this incredible healing power?

From my observations, it’s the little things animals do and the incredible way they make us feel. It’s the inquisitive nature of miniature horses that we find simply irresistible or the curious nibbles of a goat that brings a smile. It’s the tremendous pride that’s instilled from taking care of another living thing. Animals are not judgmental – we can relax and let go of our anxieties in their presence. We experience self-esteem after they master a new trick. Perhaps more than anything, caring for animals lets all of us connect with the best part of ourselves, the healthy part.

Those of us who love and respect children and animals are thrilled when a company likes Halo, Purely for Pets, comes along and shares our values. The company has been our “corporate angel,” supporting and nurturing our programs with great warmth and sincerity.
