NOW YOUR DOG CAN HAVE HIS CAKE AND BE HEALTHY TOO
May 5th, 2009 by Dr. Donna Spector
What better way to show you care than giving your dog a delicious treat? Although cake should not be on your dog’s menu, there are a tremendous amount of options with the advent of doggie bakeries and gourmet treats (not to mention your dinner plate!). With all of these options, choosing a nutritious treat can be a challenge. In general, the ideal treat should be low in fat and calories and filled with nutritious natural ingredients. Also look for treats that have added health benefits such as antioxidants, vitamins or other natural supplements to really kick your dog’s health up a notch!
Word of caution: Many owners tend to “over-treat” their dogs! This introduces many extra calories into a dog’s diet and is a leading cause of pudgy pooches. Although many people don’t see overweight or obese dogs as a problem, health risks of obesity are real. Obesity contributes to a wide range of health problems, from arthritis to diabetes, and it has been
well documented that obese dogs live shorter lives. Click here for weight loss tips and to read more about managing obesity.
Follow these guidelines to select the best treat for your dog.
