WHAT IS AN ANIMAL SHELTER AND WHY DO WE NEED THEM?

Shelter1United States animal shelters provide temporary housing for approximately 8 to 10 million unwanted dogs and cats every year.

Due to irresponsible pet ownership and uncontrolled overbreeding, the need for animal shelters has never been greater. Unfortunately our shelters often suffer from very limited food, space and medical resources.

Whether you are an entrepreneurial sort, like young Annabelle Held, who started her own dog treat business and donates all profits to her local shelter in Marietta Georgia (read about Halo’s donation to the shelter here) or a business who can make a monetary donation–local animal shelters always need your support. Adopt a pet! Donate your time! Call your shelter and ask how you can help.

i just read the story why we need shelter’s for UNWANTED pet’s. i could not help but cry. because a month ago my husband and i went to pet smart to buy our parrot supplies and a family. not meaning disrespect they had fallen on very hard times and the shelter was there they wanted their three little dog’s to be taken in and i heard one lady w/the shelter make a comment to another co- worker these dog’s just need to be but down. i step over to the family i said i will take your wonderful pet’s. they got our address as one was left at home they came right away to drop off their pet’s. they were flea ridden dirty and i don’t think ever groomed. but i saw something in their very soul…. they needed love care and good food. and i can’t tell you how much money we spent at the vet —ALOT ! but they were worth saving even though one was badly crippled… we are not all perfect. and the vet sems to think due to being abused. i would not let them go to that shelter. and i know alot of area shelther that are so go…. but i have had dealing with this shelter and they are not as nice as they let on and , i heard the rude comment. and, i found a moma cat in our wood as i was walking one day and i took mama cat and kitten’s all but one who seemed a little weak i wanted to nurs her back to health and took her to the vet. i called the next morning to see how they were doing they told me that they took all and but them down …. i was so hurt mad and so many other feelings went through me…. how could they and all was said too many cats.why on earth do people get pet’s why if they treat them so cruel and how would they like to be put in a box deep in woods w/out water and food or love just by a very cold heart and such cruel hand’s … i would have kept those cat’s if i had known. and the quilt that it has given me never would i use that shelter. i do take toy and blankets and treats and food but never would i leave a animal because when i do it is for the life of the pet. they have feeling’s just as any living human.and i never let my dog’ out alone and away on leash even inmy fenced yard as we live where ther are birs of prey and other animals that could harm my dog’s. but back to my new kid’s that were added to the pet’s we have which was two thefamily told another person they knew and they brought over a vcarge black dog who is older and grey in the face now she runs and play’s and she is a inside girl just as my small ones. they are wanted at last and know that they get fed twice a day they don’t gulp food anymore and they all get home made meal’s with the spot stew recipe along with vita mineral and two get the hip and joint w/ the c and they all smell grreat w/ the halo dog shampoo and the eye wash did wonders on the lhasa/poo and they all have clean ears w/ halo ear wash great products and the shelter’s ar very lucky to have wholesome food for those un wanted pet’s . i will say i get my pet’s even though they do not run loose FIXED and w/ chips. it has been different as i am a older lady now and work but i realize i can not save all but sometimes it is right as it was w/ all my new girls they are so smart and now they belong and it shows in them. i cry at all the unwanted pet’s. and i do agree the law should make a pet owner spay or nutuer the pet’s they have.we went through alot of exspence and time getting 4 unwanted pets back to health due to pet parents (if you can call them that) not caring. and i wasn’t easy at my age. but i do stay in the kitchen long periods fixing the meals for six dog’s now.i cooked from wayback for my pet’s way before the new age as i am a old timer. but it pay’s off for the pet’s i have never had as many pet’s as i now do… and , it is a little work but at play time for they 4 legged kid w/ me it seems all worth all the work. w/ two it never seemed like work but no one will get these kid’s ever to have them torn -up again we do love them. i just wish a person would really think if they are not sure if they really want a pet or if a child ask’s just say no if the adult doesn’t want to care for the pet…. they have feelings to and understand how you feel about them and it isn’t fun to NOT be wanted….. i have seen this first hand … and , they can be beautiful… i have seen this first hand. even though i know food is being given when you see the animal and care for as i did with these pet’s they need homes more than anything w/ love. it just breaks my heart right in two pieces for these animals.
