HE WALKED OVER 2,000 MILES TO RAISE AWARENESS OF CANINE CANCER

lukecap1It’s been over two years since Luke Robinson and his two Great Pyrenees embarked on their journey by foot from Austin, Texas, to Boston, Mass to raise awareness about canine cancer. The adventure was sparked by the death of Luke’s Great Pyrenees Malcolm, from bone cancer in 2006.

A few months ago, I hosted Luke; his coordinator, Ginger Morgan; and his two wonderful dogs, Hudson and Murphy, at my home while they were in New Jersey with many more miles to go. And now the incredible trek is just about over, with Luke and his dogs arriving in Bean Town on in mid-June.

To celebrate the finish of the 2,400-mile walk, Luke invites dog lovers (and their dogs) on Saturday, June 19th at 9:30 a.m. for a memorial service, followed by a final walk mile. The meeting place is Kelleher Garden Back Bay Fen. So far, over 100 people from 18 states are joining Luke, Hudson and Murphy for the final mile together.

Halo, a longtime supporter of the walk, will provide treats and samples of Halo Spot’s Stew (which is the only food honored by the National Canine Cancer Foundation with its Seal of Excellence).

A Puppy Up! Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with music, vendors, and contests will be held at the Parkman Bandstand in Boston Common. And the final event of the day is the Puppy Up! Gala at the Fairmont Copley Plaza from 6 to 11 p.m. The cost is $125 per person (no dogs allowed at this event) with live and silent auctions. Funds raised from the event will go toward Luke’s next venture, called 2 Million Dogs, “Cancer. Touches. Everyone” to raise money for research to find the causes of canine cancer.

Once the Boston festivities finish, Luke first plans on going to Colorado to work on a book about his journey, which has been documented on Facebook at http://tinyurl.com/24bwdhp or check out his website at www.2dogs2000miles.org.
