ASK-THE-VET: MY DOG’S EAR TIP KEEPS SWELLING UP

Question: My dog’s ear tip keeps swelling up. We took her to the vet and he gave her medication to resolve the fluid in between. It did work but now it’s back again but lower in the ear tip. Is it because of the food we feed her? She is about 9/10 years old.

Answer: Thanks for your question. What you are describing sounds like an aural hematoma and often results from itchy or infected ears.

Recurrent ear infections or chronically itchy ears can have many causes including inhaled allergies or allergies to food. Some dogs with ear mites or other parasites will also experience these signs. Talk to your vet about the underlying problem that is likely to be causing this problem.

Good luck.
