FREEKIBBLE.COM KIBBLE DROP, EAST STOP #3: WASHINGTON HUMANE SOCIETY, WASHINGTON, DC

Washington Humane Society, Washington, DC was the 3rd stop for the FreeKibble truck heading East which was made on Thursday, December 15th. There were 40,000 meals of Halo Spot’s Stew for dogs and cats delivered.

Halo, Purely for Pets, and FreeKibble.com teamed up to deliver 400,000 delicious, nutritious holiday meals of Halo Spot’s Stew to animal shelters, rescues and food banks “Koast-to-Koast”! On Monday, December 12th, TWO full trucks of tasty kibble left Lebanon, TN… one headed West, and the other one headed East, for the BIGGEST Kibble Drop to date.

The Washington Humane Society (WHS), the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States, has been the area’s leading voice for animals since 1870. As the only open-access shelter in the Nation’s Capital, the WHS provides comfort and care to nearly 30,000 animals each year.

WHS established the city’s first public housing facility for stray and unwanted animals. A year later, WHS pioneered the creation of the District’s first ever animal cruelty law.

The organization has helped spearhead new legislation to protect the animals that live in the nation’s capital.

Operation Paws for Homes, Inc. rescues dogs of all breeds and ages from high-kill shelters reducing the numbers being euthanized daily. They provide foster homes where homeless pets can get the love and attention needed before finding their forever homes.

The organization provides pet adoption services in Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, and parts of Southern Pennsylvania. Each year they take in hundreds of wonderful animals who were left at shelters by no fault of their own.

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington has been committed to the humane treatment of animals and to the promotion of animal welfare. They provide care and refuge for homeless and suffering animals by placing them in loving, responsible homes.

Since 1944, the League has gone from a small converted building to a modern, totally-enclosed shelter designed specifically for the comfort of the animals. The small group of 12 volunteers has grown to over 300. The League’s humane work has expanded from the care and shelter of needy animals to include a formal humane education program and community services.

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is an organization that provides pet adoption in Virginia, Washington, DC and Maryland.

They find homes for dogs and cats rescued from high-kill shelters or whose owners could no longer care for them or were found as strays.

Homeward Trails seeks to find permanent adoptive homes in the Mid-Atlantic Region for dogs and cats. In so doing, they seek to reduce the rate of euthanasia through the rescue and placement of homeless animals; to support proactive spay/neuter practices; to promote positive and ongoing behavioral training; and to educate the public about how to care for their animals in a humane way. They not only facilitate adoptions from local shelters, but also support a large network of foster care providers.
