Best Dogs If You Live In An Apartment

English Bulldog

Apartment living typically means living in a smaller space than in a single-family house with a yard. But living in an apartment shouldn’t keep you from owning a dog. In fact, there are plenty of breeds that do well in smaller spaces; some may even surprise you!

Yorkshire Terrier– “Yorkies” top most everyone’s list for good dogs for smaller dwellings because, well, they’re small! They don’t require a lot of space and they aren’t big shedders, which is nice when you’re sharing small quarters with a furry friend.

English Bulldogs– Bulldogs are known for their chillaxed nature. Most don’t demand a lot of exercise and are perfectly content hanging on the couch with you, rather than creating mayhem in your home.

Greyhounds – Sure they’re fast when they need to be….but surprisingly, greyhounds are actually big old couch potatoes, making them great apartment dogs. They still require exercise but once they expend some energy, they are happy to plop down on the dog bed and catch a snooze.

Great Dane– Another surprisingly good apartment dog is the Great Dane! Despite their size they are mellow friends who don’t require a lot of exercise. Just give them a big enough pathway from the couch to the food and water bowls so they don’t knock anything over with their tails and you should be just fine.

Maltese – These little cuties are also good for apartment living because they are small and don’t shed much. Plus, they aren’t usually big barkers, which will make your neighbors very happy!

Basset Hound– They may have some heft (many weigh in around 60 pounds) but Basset Hounds are pretty laid back dogs who are content to lounge around with you.

These are just a few pups that make good apartment dogs. Remember, just because a dog likes to laze around doesn’t mean they don’t need exercise! Be sure to provide your dog the proper amount of daily activity and, if you are away at work consider hiring a dog walker to give them a bit of fresh air and exercise during the day.

I’ve seen a Great Dane in a small house, and it’s not at all convenient for anyone!
