Halo Company Statement in Response to FDA Findings on DCM

Feeding your dog right

Halo is a company dedicated to creating exceptional food that dogs love and pet parents trust. We pride ourselves on the quality of our pet nutrition products. Our recipes are designed and formulated by an experienced and respected animal nutritionist, and we consult with veterinarians to ensure we continue to offer the best pet food  we can. We recognize the concern with grain-free diets and the possible link to a disease called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and we share those concerns and take them very seriously. We are pleased to say that the Halo brand was not listed in the FDA report released June 27, 2019, identifying sixteen brands associated with DCM.

Our dog foods not only contain the nutrients recognized as essential for dogs, but we also supplement them with nutrients such as taurine to support heart health.  We offer both grain-free and whole-grain diets, which are formulated to meet and exceed  the essential nutrient levels recommended by AAFCO.  In addition, Halo tests our products to ensure their nutrient profile is to our standard. We will continue to investigate this matter, and, we will always strive to provide the best nutrition for pets.

I can’t find small cans of chicken flavor wet food for dogs. Have you stopped selling them? Are you going out of business? I can’t find them in stores or online.

    Hi Kathy,

Are you looking for the adult recipe? If so, we do still make them . Have you tried Petco, Petsmart, Amazon and/or Chewy?

I appreciate your statement regarding the heart issues and dog food. As my dog recently switched from one of the listed brands to Halo. My dog started having seizures about a month ago and it got pretty bad. He is doing ok, but I’m still worried about what he eats.

Actually Halo was listed at least 3 separate times in Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs Complaints Submitted to FDA-CVM January 1, 2014 – April 30, 2019.
A 4 year old Great Dane got DCM and CHF with possible Taurine deficit (it wasn’t measured).
An 11 year old mutt was eating Halo Salmon Dry Recipe around the time he was diagnosed with DCM and CHF.
AND a 5 year old Coton de had to be EUTHANIZED from DCM and CHF after eating the Halo Dry Vegan Food mixed with fresh/cooked peas for 2 years….
You were ABSOLUTELY named on FDA.gov! Denying ownership and accountability is not what we want to see with our dog’s lives at stake! You had a chance to say something and you blew it with a lie.

      Hi Lexi,

Allow us to clarify. We are pleased to share that the Halo brand was not listed in the FDA report released June 27, 2019 identifying the top sixteen brands associated with DCM. However, out of 524 cases reported to the FDA between January 1, 2014 and April 30, 2019, two cases listed only Halo pet food. Three other cases reported feeding another company’s food in addition to Halo. Our top priority is your pets’ health. At this time, the FDA has not been able to pinpoint the exact cause or link it to a specific ingredient and yet we will continue to investigate this matter, and we will always strive to provide the best nutrition for pets.

Hi, I started using the puppy grain free chicken because I thought Halo wasn’t on the list, but now finding out you are has me concerned. Is Halo made with the Pea and lentil that is the issue? What is used to substitute for the grain free? Thank you.

          Hi Laura,

As mentioned, we are pleased to say that the Halo brand was not listed in the FDA report released June 27, 2019, identifying sixteen brands associated with DCM with the most cases. However, out of 524 cases reported to the FDA between January 1, 2014 and April 30, 2019, two cases listed only Halo pet food. The FDA has not been able to pinpoint the exact cause or link it to a specific ingredient and yet we will continue to investigate this matter, and we will always strive to provide the best nutrition for pets. We do offer both grain-free and whole-grain diets, which are formulated to meet and exceed the essential nutrient levels recommended by AAFCO.

Thank you VERY much for tackling this subject. I’m in the process of changing my dogs’ food and have been very impressed with Halo, but wanting to know how you felt about this scare. Thank you thank you thank you.

I started using the Halo grain free puppy wet chicken a couple of months ago mainly because your site said Halo wasn’t listed as the brands reported by the FDA. After reading that Halo was listed in 2 cases, I am very concerned and would like to know what ingredients are being used to replace the grains? I wish there were more choices for wet puppy food that is not grain free.

    Thanks

I’m really confused…I have been a Halo client for about 8 years now. I give my dogs Chicken Stew and have for years. I’ve noticed the unavailability and it has pissed me off!!!! I go thru 35 13.2 oz cans a week. I used to buy the 22 oz for my Giant Schnauzer. I have called y’all three times and have never gotten a response back. UNACCEPTABLE. This morning..I order from chewy.com, I noticed the chicken stew is a new formula, but not in stock yet. WTF???? WHAT IS Y’ALL’S PROBLEM… I’m seriously leaving Halo for another brand.

We discovered Halo just by accident really. Was the best thing that ever happened.

My shih tzu really needed a quality food (breed prone to MAJOR skin allergies).
For the last few years it had been a miracle food when my dog did not have his food it was so obvious. He would be lethargic, apathetic, just not himself.

He is now going on 13 years old, he still acts like he did as a puppy. We walk every night, he is playful, and it’s a direct result of his diet.

However, as of late he is having anal gland issues, his skin is a mess, he’s got this weird popping noise when he turns a certain way.
The only change has been the formula (which I just found out). I had a feeling something was up because you can’t find it anywhere except online and petco. It use to be available at Sprouts and they didn’t want to sell you out but, I could tell while talking to one of their employees they let you guys go for a reason they didn’t say it but they didn’t need to.

I know we D.I.N.K.S are fun to poke fun at cause our dogs are our kids and it’s funny but, guys these dogs are the only kids Gods gonna give me so don’t mess around with their food PLEASE!

Otherwise, we have been forever grateful to you for the time we have been given with our baby because of your wonderful food.
