July 16th, 2010 by David Yaskulka

newsackLast pop quiz on this topic — which of the following are legally acceptable for pet food companies to put in chicken meal? This should be easy if you’ve paid attention to the last three.

A) Unfit-for-human-consumption ingredients

B) Waste product meats (from supermarkets, restaurants, packinghouses, etc.)

C) “4D” chickens (diseased, dying, dead, disabled)

D) All of the above

You probably already guessed the answer. And of course, Halo NEVER uses chicken meal, beef meal, fish meal, or any other ingredients that are unfit-for-human-consumption.

A) Diseased chickens

WHY ELLEN DEGENERES CHOSE HALO

June 11th, 2010 by David Yaskulka

ellen-about-photoIf you are new to our blog, you may be wondering why animal advocate and award-winning entertainer Ellen DeGeneres chose Halo.

First, just to be clear — Ellen is NOT a paid spokesperson. She began as a customer, and then became a co-owner of the company a little over two years ago.

Here’s what she said:

“One of the things I really believe is that if you’re going to have pets you should treat them like you’d treat yourself. I don’t mean you should treat them to new shoes or a fancy car – I’m talking about the basics; a nice bed, fun toys and good food.

“Anyway a few years ago I was looking for some pet food for one of my dogs who was allergic to everything…honestly, even his own fur. I tried everything, our vet tried everything and finally I found a little company that had the perfect food for him. It’s called Halo, Purely for Pets.

“So, because I think Halo is incredible, I decided to become part owner in hopes that all animals have the chance to be the healthiest they can be. And I’m anxious to spread the word so that everybody knows about Halo. ”

DR. GREG TOUTS HALO INGREDIENTS – “LIKE A NORMAL SHOPPING LIST”

March 30th, 2010 by David Yaskulka

DrGregDr. Greg Martinez, DVM, author of Dog Dish Diet (Riparian Press), says, “boosting health through better nutrition provides pet owners with peace of mind and, often, reduced vet bills. His popular blog, “Dr. Greg’s Dog Dish Diet” recently took on the topic of holistic pet foods.

On his way to concluding “we should feed our pets the best food we can,” Dr. Greg discussed Halo Spot’s Stew – the only brand featured in the article.

Here’s what Dr. Greg had to say:

“Holistic pet foods like Spots Stew (Halo) began because over 15 years the inventor made food for her sick cat, then her friends, then for millions of our pets. The food label on Spot’s Stew is easy to read, the ingredients sounding like a normal shopping list. Compare that to a can or bag of food in your pantry, garage, or closet. The stabilizers and preservatives almost crowd the food ingredients off the label. Where the human grade ingredients of Spots ; Chicken, carrots, celery, zucchini, green beans, green peas, turkey, calcium citrate, barley, oats , soy sauce, garlic, kelp, pasta, dicalcium phosphate, chicken liver, zinc gluconate, ascorbic acid, copper gluconate are easily recognized as whole foods, minerals, and vitamins.”

Thanks, Dr. Greg. I expect members of the Halo family will be interested in your pet care advice, and homemade dog food recipes.
