For the second year in a row, everyone’s favorite 100% protein treats took top prize in The Reviewers Choice Awards among dog treats. Halo Spot’s Stew dry dog food also won a Finalist award. As the Buzzillions award site explains, “think of these as the People’s Choice Awards of online shopping” – recognizing the highest-rated products from over 9 million online consumer reviews.

Even though we won for top dog treat – many of our reviews come from cat families, who know that felines can get ferociously addicted to Halo Liv-a-Littles!

As Bettina from Roy, Utah’s Buzzillions review states, “Five stars. Great for either cats or dogs. We purchased these treats for our two Pomeranian’s. It was very interesting to see our very aloof cat come running when we called “chicken” after he got a taste of the treat. It is always fun to see which one of our little ones will get to the kitchen first. ”

Susan D from Illinois explained, “We have three cats who absolutely love this product. It is the only treat our 13-year old diabetic boy can have since it doesn’t contain additives, preservatives or anything else that will raise his blood glucose. He doesn’t mind having his blood sugar tested, he knows his favorite treat will follow.”

That reflects my own experience at home, where our cat Sterling runs to the kitchen when our dog Bert gets his injections – so then they each enjoy a treat.

All Halo treats are made with the highest quality ingredients. Spot’s Stew Dry Dog Food is part of Halo’s Natural Dry Dog Food that is highly digestible, high in protein and quality ingredients, low in carbs and always created with your pet’s entire well-being in mind. Halo never uses chicken meal or other rendered meats.

“This recognition for our pet food is especially important to all of us at Halo because it comes straight from the consumer,” said Steve Marton, CEO of Halo. “Halo wins awards like this only because consumers are demanding great ingredients. Every Halo ingredient is a real, natural ingredient that consumers recognize and understand. Every meat we use can also be sent to make human food products. That’s what consumers are demanding, and that’s what Halo has delivered for over 20 years.”

We’re honored that the Eco Chic “Alpha-Dog” Tammy Preast chose to feature Halo.

She begins her story by getting right to the heart of the matter, asking “Do you know what goes into your pet?”

Then they responding using the words from Halo’s own web site, saying:

“You are what you eat” is true for animals as well as for people. Read the ingredients. Can you identify them? Are there inferior by-products, “meals” or chemicals?

At Halo Pet Foods, they are purely focused on your pet’s well-being. Halo holistic natural dog food and natural cat food are made from real foods you can recognize. Safe, never recalled and NO chicken meal or other rendered meats. 100%Guaranteed.

We appreciate that the Los Angeles Times told its readers about this opportunity to help cats in animal shelters!

Here’s some of what they had to say: “On an average day, FreeKibbleKat posts a cat-related multiple-choice trivia question, and each visitor’s answer triggers the donation of 10 pieces of dry cat food to a shelter. But during Friday’s Hi-5 event, it’s upping the ante, donating five times the amount of cat food it normally would (that’s 50 pieces of cat food, kids) for each response. (Pet food company Halo is sponsoring the event…”

They were also kind enough to talk about our continuing donations of one meal for each follower of @freekibble and @halopets on Twitter. We like that the magazine “meets new millennium needs with centuries-old health solutions, combined with contemporary natural health care methods and modalities.” That perspective no doubt led writer Lauren McNitt to tout Halo’s Healthsome Skin & Coat Treats in her article “Functional Pet Treats.”

Halo recipes also combine that centuries-old wisdom – in the form of real, natural ingredients – with contemporary health wisdom pointing us to the importance of essential fatty acids. She writes, “These biscuits are made with a blend of six botanical oils and essential fatty acids, which help prevent skin inflammation and hair loss.” It’s true!

At home, our boxer boy Bert gobbles these treats with his twice-daily medicine. We add a regular dose of Halo Dream Coat, and no more dry skin!

Their new article for the Auctiva business education site, “The Tweet Smell of Success,” features Halo’s success on Twitter, the popular microblogging site.

Explaining that the secret to Twitter success is having a product and company you can truly believe in, the article tells why Halo – “the quality leader in holistic pet care” — has been easy to promote. One reason is “Ellen fans and thousands of other animal lovers flock to Halo’s animal rescue activity on Twitter.”

At the age of seven, told she was too young to work at the local Humane Society, Mimi started mailing spare change to the shelter. “She just has this huge heart and it plays out with animals,” says her father, Kelly, 48. “She’s always been protective and passionate about animals.”

And:

Since its start on April 1, 2008, Freekibble.com has donated more than 400,000 pounds of dog and cat food. The organization is the sole supplier of food for 14 shelters across the country. Another 60 rescues have received tens of thousands of pounds of huge one-time donations. An average of 45,000 people visit the site daily. “It’s so cool, it’s really exciting,” says Mimi, a seventh grader. “I knew it was important that I did something for others.”

We appreciate their talking about Halo and Halo co-owner Ellen DeGeneres as part of this national trend. They further discuss why people are willing to pay a bit more:

“Tighter budgets have many consumers spending more time at home with their pets, highlighting their importance in the family and making their owners more likely to spend discretionary dollars on them,’’ said Mark Kalaygian, editor-in-chief of Pet Business, a magazine for pet retailers. “And the high cost of veterinary care is making pet owners more aware of the importance of preventive care, which starts with providing optimal nutrition.’’

the high cost of veterinary care is making pet owners more aware of the importance of preventive care, which starts with providing optimal nutrition.

At the same time, the outbreak of contaminated pet food that sickened and killed pets across the country in 2007 helped fuel interest in natural pet foods and prompt consumers to feed their own felines and pooches only the finest.

Halo CEO Steve Marton (seen on the magazine cover with his good friend Stosch) tells the story in an exclusive interview.

Here’s a sneak peak.

“Halo products have the best ingredients for dogs and cats. Plain and simple, that’s what we strive to be known for,” explains Marton. “That’s why Ellen DeGeneres became a part owner of our company. That’s why she spreads the word.”

“As more consumers are reading ingredients labels –and understanding what the ingredients are—our sales improve. For example, consumers are just starting to understand ingredients like chicken meal, which is a rendered meat.”
