Are you planning to move? Do you have a dog or two or more? Need to find a location that has plenty of dog-friendly parks, trails and other places to take your pet? Well, a new study shows the top US cities that have plenty of room for all dog lovers.
Redfin, a real estate brokerage, partnered with Rover.com, an online community of dog walkers and pet sitters, to narrow down the best cities that cater to dogs. According to Redfin, Rover ran the numbers on over 14,000 cities across the country, compiling a list with the highest counts of walks, dog walkers and sitters, along with total hours, minutes and distance per walk by each dog walker or sitter on Rover.
Then Redfin took Rover’s data and recorded how often the keyword ‘dog’ appeared in the online listing descriptions of homes for sales. This includes phrases like “dog-friendly, dog park, etc.” They also included each city’s Walk Score, a way to track how walkable places are to live.
Below are the top 10 dog-friendly cities in the US:
- Seattle, WA
- Chicago, IL
- Denver, CO
- Manhattan, NY
- Washington, DC
- Portland, OR
- Los Angeles, CA
- Brooklyn, NY
- San Francisco, CA
- San Diego, CA

How can Denver be considered dog-friendly when they have a BSL against pit-bull type dogs?????????
Amie Harrison
Exactly what I was going to comment!!!! DOG BIGOTS should never make the list. I would avoid driving through that horrible place simply because I have three pit bulls and no telling what could happen. My respect for this list is now nil.

Lewes, Delaware

The least friendly place that I have found is Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The National Forest there doesn’t allow dogs on their trails anywhere in the parks except for one trail that is mostly paved and runs next to their equipment storage facility.

How can Denver be on the list when it has several breed bans, including a pit bull ban? Even after CO repealed its breed ban laws, Denver maintains it can still have city ordinances banning pit bulls. They need to be removed from this list.

One of my favorite cities made into the top ten! Portland, Or.

How is Denver dog friendly city, when they have a ban on pitbull type dogs?
Dorothy Savage
Denver?! They have breed specific legislation. I wouldn’t call that dog friendly.

You need to get DENVER off of this list–do your homework before putting out information like this–see this webpage which states Denver’s BAN on Pit Bulls and Pit Bull related characteristics for all dogs!!!

I agree with ALL who comented against Denver. Get it OFF THE LIST- it isdefinitely NOT dog (animal) friendly!!
Erica Seelig
I agree with the people who KNOW that Denver bans Pit Bulls in the city! PLEASE remove Denver from your list AND tell viewers WHY you removed it!

I don’t live in a big city, but our small town Woodland Park, Co. is very dog friendly, with 3 million acres of Pike National Forest at our doorstep. Everyone in town and in our county has dogs.

Carmel, California doesn’t make the list? Where dogs are allowed in every shop, gallery and most hotels, and several restaurants have doggy menus???

Pets on leash in National Parks (pets does not include cats by the way and when I travel my cat needs to get and go for a stroll on his leash too)

I do agree with people about the bans on Pit Bulls and Bull types. sadly that there are so many myths still believed. I know they are myths but they still make me more afraid for my cat, crazy! Anyone remember “Spanky and Our Gang” when the days were of the pitty as a great kids buddy?
Amie Harrison
Of course I remember, they would rerun them a lot. They can’t do that now. It would interfere with their “vicious killer pit pulls murder kids” campaign to have a pit bull hanging out with a gang of kids. 🙂 Plus still the most decorated military hero dog of all time is a pit bull, Stubby. And they were nanny dogs…and I could go on and on.

I meant to say that my cat needs to get out and go for a stroll on his leash too. Yes, he’s a very unusual kitty! Never-the-less cats are extremely persecuted; rarely will a motel except them. I certainly can’t take him to a park or even near an off-leash dog park!!! If we go out to the woods I have to be certain there are no dogs in the perimeter and if I hear one coming I have to yell “Cat Present”. He was mauled several times by “friendly” dogs who tore their leashes out of their owners hands to charge him. That was in front of my own home!
I share your plight people because I use to be a dog person, not no more folks not after this kitten; he sold me and stole my heart!
